Approving, declining and sending a prescription

Once a request exists, the named prescriber takes over. Everything is recorded on a timeline: who requested, the face-to-face confirmation, the approval and the send.

Approving (clinic prescriber)

Only the named prescriber, or a prescribing clinic owner, sees the Approve prescription panel. To approve they must:

  1. Tick the attestation: I confirm I have carried out a face-to-face consultation with this patient for this treatment. Approval is blocked without it.
  2. Enter their registration number (for example GMC 1234567) and type their full name.
  3. Sign in the signature box, then press Approve prescription.

The signature, name, registration number and timestamps are kept on the prescription as a permanent Approval record.

External prescribers

For an external prescriber, use Record external approval after they have consulted the patient and signed the prescription themselves. Tick the face-to-face confirmation, check their name and registration number, and add a note such as where the signed original is filed. The clinic retains the signed original.

Declining

A request that is not appropriate can be Declined with a required reason, which stays on the record.

Sending to the pharmacy

Once approved, the Send to pharmacy panel emails a copy to the pharmacy: enter the pharmacy name and pharmacy email. If you transmitted it another way, such as by hand, tick Mark as sent anyway instead. The signed original always stays with the clinic.
